Local SEO Checklist — Canada 2026
Local pack visibility is the cheapest, fastest lead source most Canadian small businesses ignore. This 40-point checklist covers Google Business Profile, citations, schema, reviews, and on-site local signals.
Who this is for
Canadian service businesses, retail locations, healthcare practices, and any business where customers search "[service] near me" or "[service] toronto." Works for one location or multi-location.
Section 1: Google Business Profile
Claim and verify the profile (postcard for new, instant for existing).
Primary category set to most-searched service term, not a generic.
Secondary categories: 3–5 related services.
Business description 750 chars with primary keyword + location.
Hours set, including holiday hours quarterly.
Service area or address: pick one model, not both.
30+ photos: storefront, team, work, products, customers.
Products and services filled with prices where reasonable.
Posts: 1 per week for first 90 days, then 1 per 2 weeks.
Q&A: seed your own answers to the 10 most-asked questions.
Section 2: NAP consistency and citations
Name, Address, Phone identical across every directory.
Submit to top 30 Canadian directories: Yelp, YellowPages, Better Business Bureau, Canada411, 411.ca, Cylex, Hotfrog, Yellowpages.ca, Foursquare, Bing Places.
Industry-specific: HomeStars (contractors), RateMDs (healthcare), TripAdvisor (hospitality).
Audit existing citations quarterly via Moz Local or BrightLocal.
Footer NAP on every page of website, matching exactly.
Section 3: Reviews
Automated review request after every completed job/transaction.
Goal: 50+ Google reviews, 4.7+ average.
Respond to every review within 48 hours.
Use keyword + location in your responses naturally.
Negative reviews: respond once, calmly, offer to take offline.
Section 4: On-site local signals
LocalBusiness schema on the homepage.
Service Area schema if multi-region.
PostalAddress + GeoCoordinates in JSON-LD.
Embedded Google Map on contact page.
Location-specific landing pages: /toronto/web-design, /vaughan/web-design, etc.
Internal links from homepage to each location page.
Talkerstein recommendation
If you do the GBP optimization + 50 reviews + NAP consistency, you will appear in the local pack within 60–90 days for most Canadian small business categories. The other sections compound from there.
FAQ
How long until I see results?
30 days for new Google Business Profile traction. 60–90 days for local pack ranking. 6 months for organic ranking improvement from local landing pages.
Can I do this myself?
Yes for a single location, 8–12 hours of focused work. Multi-location, agency-managed makes more sense for scale and citation hygiene.
